What is a Developmental Editor?

Wild Path

A developmental editor helps you find your own unique path through the wilderness of creative decisions.

When you drafted your story, you made decisions. Who are the characters? What is the setting? Which events happen in which order to produce the plot? How does it all end? You may have gotten feedback from friends and family along the way, revised your story multiple times yourself, workshopped it in a writer's group, or other measures.

However, you still ended up asking yourself some soul-searching questions. For instance:

Does this story make sense?

Why don't people who read my story like my main character better?

How do I convey that the villain really deserved to be blown into pieces and those pieces eaten by sharks and those sharks made into shark fin soup?

My job is to look at your ideas with you and give an assessment of how clearly you're communicating those ideas, strategize with you about how to bring your ideas fully to life on the page, illuminate ramifications of those ideas you may not have been aware of before, and give you options if you're not satisfied with the path your story is currently on.
